恐怖龍，其最大身長和翼展均約為1.83米。雖然是所有龍族中體型最小的龍，卻有著最大的種群數(shù)量。它噴出的火焰較為粘稠，不易于流動(dòng)，可以與丙烷噴氣燈媲美；它的皮膚被點(diǎn)狀角質(zhì)鱗片所覆蓋，有著精致的龍紋。

恐怖龍部分惱人的習(xí)性經(jīng)常被拿來和海鷗相提并論。動(dòng)畫角色設(shè)計(jì)師 Simon Otto 曾這樣說道：“ 恐怖龍的運(yùn)動(dòng)方式靈感來源于“飛鼠，蠑螈，以及某種沙漠蜥蜴在熱沙地上跳動(dòng)，讓腳保持涼快的動(dòng)作。”

Measuring a modest six feet in length with a six-foot wingspan , the Terrible Terror is the smallest species but the largest in terms of dragon population. Its firepower is comparable to a propane torch that launches a sticky rather than flowing flame ,and its skin features fine spot details over an organic pattern of scales . Often compared to a seagull in its somewhat nasty attitude, the Terrible Terror moves in ways inspired by 'flying squirrels, salamanders, and one particular behavior of a desert gecko that prances to keep its feet cool on the hot sand;' notes Head of Character Animation Simon Otto.

In an earlier phase of the film's development, the Terrible Terror was actually designed to play the role of Toothless as created by Cressida Cowell in the original book. After two and a half years of design, modeling. and rigging, "it was the first dragon to be brought to life, and it practically brought tears to our eyes when Animator Gabe Hordos made it blink and lick its eye," recalls Head of Rigging Jeff Light. Ultimately, however, it seemed that the dragon Hiccup would befriend had to be a force to be reckoned with, instead of simply having the smallest Viking team up with the smallest dragon. "Setting Toothless up as a threatening presence gave us that vital sense of tension for Hiccup's story," explains Director Chris Sanders.
